Back in 2003, SOCOM (US Army Special Operations Command) decided to find a successor to the M4 carbine, requiring a new type of combat weapon. They were looking for gun modules that shared common operating characteristics, so that operators would have the ability to rapidly change weapon configurations to suit the ever-changing battlefield. Due to its light weight, adaptability, accuracy and modular design – the FN' SCAR system beat out the field of competitors and was selected for the full field within SOCOM.

The idea behind the SCAR design and the true beauty of SCAR rifles is that in some cases they share 85 percent of the same parts between models. Therefore, it is easy to logically line up the guns. The SCAR system gives operators the ability to change the stock, barrel, sight, and many other key elements of the weapon in minutes, and the procedure does not require gunsmith experience.

There are major subtypes of SCAR rifles: the SCAR-L (for light), which uses the 5.56X45mm round, and the SCAR-H (for heavy), which is chambered in 7.62X 51mm.
Both versions use an anconic short stroke gas system. This particular method of working has proven reliable and clean in practice. Through this system, the array has fewer feedbacks, easier maintenance, and increased reliability compared to traditional AR platforms.
