Ft Bragg Overdose - A fatal overdose in a Fort Bragg parking lot reveals the dark reality of Mendocino County's opioid crisis

At approximately 10:20 a.m., Fort Bragg first responders were dispatched to the Safeway parking lot in the 600 block of South Main Street, where a person was reportedly in a car in the middle of a drug overdose.

This morning's death is a sad reminder that in 2021, Mendocino County had the second highest number of opioid overdose deaths in the Golden State. The California Overdose Monitoring Board reports that 47 people died of overdoses last year. This overdose crisis continues to plague our rural county despite the ubiquity of Narcan, the overdose reversal drug used by first responders.

R ACHEAL BOWMAN, a single mother from Aberdeen, Maryland, was finishing her shift as a postal worker on the afternoon of June 11, 2021, when her son's friend rang her. Her son, Matthew Disney, a 20-year-old soldier stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, did not answer the phone. Neither his girlfriend, nor his mother, nor his younger sisters could get to him. The military follows a strict procedure for notifying the next of kin of casualties and always sends a uniformed officer to personally deliver the bad news. It wasn't like that. In fact, Diamond died too. His body was found lying on the floor on top of Disney's body as if in an embrace. Many Fort Bragg soldiers have died in similar circumstances recently - quietly, in their barracks, in their bunks, in a parked car or somewhere far away, for no apparent reason.
