Marines Prep For Possible War In Europe During Massive East Coast Training Exercise

FORT DRUM, N.Y. (April 1, 2021) - Members of the Fort Drum community have a new, healthier way to eat at the Fort Drum Exchange Food Court with the grand opening of Bun-D on April 1.

Pat Hastings, Fort Drum Exchange General Manager, said the Bun-D menu should appeal to those who want a fresh salad, wrap or bowl of rice; thirsty for a cold juice blend, or just looking for a quick food option.

"We wanted to offer a healthy alternative to the military community and we felt this was a great opportunity for them,” she said. "Every menu item is prepared fresh in front of you. The variety is good, so I think there's something for everyone."

Some of the first people in line were already familiar with the restaurant's brand of using only fresh, all-natural foods and unprocessed ingredients on the menu.

Spc. Warren Grange got his first taste of Bun-D when he was in Vilseck, Germany, during a deployment.

"I had heard about this restaurant and decided to drop by one day and try it,” he said. “Personally, it suits my diet very well."

"My personal favorite is the rice bowl, and you get a choice of brown or white rice, and then you pick and choose your vegetables and proteins," he said. "It's coming out very well."

Command Sgt. May. Roberto Munoz, the Fort Drum garrison's senior adviser, was also introduced to Base D while he was in Germany about five years ago. He suggested another opportunity for healthy food in the Børsen food court and was happy to participate in the grand opening.

With a soldier's physical fitness standards redefined by the Combat Fitness Test, Munoz said it's more important than ever for them to approach nutrition with the mindset of an athlete.

"We are lucky to have people like Command Sgt. Maj. Mario Terenas (senior advisor of the 10th Mountain Division) who has been working towards that since he first got here," said Munoz.

Eric Wagenaar, deputy commander of the Fort Drum garrison, invited the first soldier in line to participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

"I just want something healthy to eat ... and a smoothie," said Spc. Breanna Miller, 543rd Quartermaster Company, 548th Sustainment Support Battalion, 10th Mountain Division Sustainment Group. "This is something I would eat regularly."

Ontario Express has an Arby's restaurant, located at the intersection of Ontario Avenue and Tigris River Valley Road, with a drive-thru, a four-seat hair salon and an eight-pump gas station. Customers can also pick up a pizza from Hunt Brothers Pizza or purchase healthy snacks such as sushi, fresh fruit and salads.
