The plane, owned and flown by legendary actor Tom Cruise, was built in 1944 at the North American Aviation Factory in Dallas, Texas. It was built as F-6K 44-12840 - a photo reconnaissance version of the P-51. One of only 163 such examples ever built, it carried two Eastman Kodak K-24 cameras in fuselage mounts to fly over enemy territory and capture images of potential targets or battlefield damage.

Model K Mustangs were nearly identical to their Model D cousins, with the only major difference being the 11-foot diameter four-bladed Aeroproducts propeller replacing the more traditional standard Hamilton unit due to production constraints. While this was not an ideal solution (the propeller had some balance issues), the availability of the Aeroproducts propeller still allowed the P-51K/F-6K to be used in combat duty.

While the wartime service of the 840 remains unknown, the Civil Air Patrol is known to have operated them in 1946. Shortly thereafter, the aircraft ended up as a government surplus and was sold to the civilian market. The aircraft went through several owners and restorations before Tom Cruise bought it in 2001.

The Mustang currently bears the markings of the 334th Fighter Squadron of the 65th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, a unit stationed in England during World War II.

Top-Gun: Maverick has continued to break box-office records since its Memorial Day release and has become a global phenomenon. The film, a sequel to the 1986 hit Top Gun, follows the U.S. Navy Capt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell takes to the skies again with exciting aerial footage, including some with this P-51.
